Chapter Five

Several days passed and Derek couldn’t remember a happier time in his life. He invited Krista over for dinner and, as he checked his spicy potato soup in the Crockpot, someone knocked on his door. Krista usually arrived home by six and they planned to meet at seven. Though early for his guest, he opened the door to find her on the breezeway. The burn of Krista’s scowl pierced his heart as he let her in.

“What’s wrong?” He’d never seen her so upset. Derek wanted to hug her but then she flung her purse on the floor and pinned him with an icy glare. He glanced down at her lip gloss and cell phone that fell out of her purse—items she didn’t seem to notice or care about—as he closed the door.

“Guess who I just met?” Krista stomped into the living room and then whirled around to face him. “Delia, the gorgeous redhead tenant who lives in U9. She made it very clear to me that she wants in your pants. Why didn’t you tell me about her?”

Shit. He shrugged his shoulders and feigned nonchalance. “How did you meet her? What did Delia say?”

Krista’s scowl deepened as Derek used the woman’s name. “I met her just now in the parking lot. The manipulative bitch claimed women come and go through here all the time and I’m nothing but your flavor of the month.”

His mouth dropped open. “That’s not true. She just wanted to get a rise out of you. I—”

“I’m not an idiot, I know that.” Krista braced her hands on her hips. “My bullshit detector beeped in the red as soon as she opened her mouth. The only thing she said that I believed is she wants you for herself. She’s the type of girl you went for in school, the type I refused to compete with. I know I’m pretty, but she’s beautiful. Why don’t you like her?”

“You’re the beautiful one, not her. Delia’s too skinny, her boobs aren’t real and she’s demanding. She purposely breaks things in her unit just to get me up there.” Derek listed off the reasons with his fingers. “She’s tried to seduce me since I took over my dad’s job. I’m just not interested in her.”

“She looks like a damn model.”

He rolled his eyes. “Her personality sucks and Delia’s ten years older than I am, not that I care about age. My mom would flip out if I brought her over for dinner. You, on the other hand, Mom likes. She invited us to dinner this Friday night if you wanna go.” He struggled to keep his temper in check as Krista tapped her foot on the floor. “Besides, I don’t mix business with pleasure. I don’t pursue women who live in the building. You’re the exception.”

His cell phone rang and he dug the device out of his jeans pocket. Krista grabbed his arm before he could answer it. “I have a job to do, Kris. Let go of my arm.”

“It’s after six.
